I think the direction I will go with this post is looking at what is taught in this old hymn written by the Father of the Reformation—Martin Luther. Luther started a reformation that still echoes in the heart of true believers everywhere today. On October 31, 1517 (almost 500 years ago), Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door at Wittenberg. He was soon to enter into a battle with the Catholic Church over the question of salvation. The Church was teaching that one must be saved through the Church. Luther had found in Romans that salvation is by grace alone through faith. He was soon to put into practice his belief that God is a Strong Fortress.
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Several places in the Scriptures God is referred to as a strong tower or fortress. It is to God that we must run to for defense while fighting spiritual battles.
II Samuel 22:2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
Psalm 91:2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
Psalm 30:10 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.
Psalm 54:4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
On earth is not his equal.
II Thessalonians 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
I Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
Romans 9:29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. (Sabaoth means Lord of the armies).
And He must win the battle.
I Samuel 17:47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.
Martin Luther spent hours and hours reading the Word, praying, and studying the Word of God. Can you see by the first two verses of his hymn that He was filled with knowledge of the Scripture? If we expect to do mighty works for God, we have to get into His Word. More importantly, we have to let His Word get into us.
