How much hoopla have you heard lately about Duck Dynasty? Even before the Phil and A&E incident, there was much to do about Duck Dynasty. People watched the show and praised the Robertson’s for the stand for Christ. The Robertsons were invited to speak at men’s meetings, churches, organizations, colleges, and anywhere a crowd could be drawn. Duck Dynasty merchandise was sold in sporting goods stores as well as in Cracker Barrel and many retail outlets. A&E was raking in the money off their brand “Duck Dynasty;” while the Robertsons were enjoying wealth from their brands of “Duck Commander” and “Buck Commander.”
The issue that is currently being discussed is Phil, the patriarch of the family, being put on hiatus by A&E for quoting Scripture. He stated that homosexuality is sin, but also mentioned other sins. He stated from his own past that he worked in the fields with African-Americans before the Civil Rights Movement grew big, and that the African-Americans did not complain. He was working side-by-side with them so he was not saying he was better than they are. Not only did A&E bow to homosexual pressure, but the NAACP decided they needed to get involved. This hoopla was over someone exercising his right to freedom of speech.
Now, here is where it becomes sticky. I support Phil Robertson and his boldness in declaring the Word of God. However, I also support A&E and their right to put Phil on hiatus. I also support the NAACP and their right to voice their dismay over Phil’s statements. I will fight with everything in me to keep the freedom of speech for each of those involved.
If the conservatives say it is a fight for freedom of speech; then to be consistent, they will have to support A&E’s and the NAACP’s right to voice their opinion against what Phil said. If the liberals say it is about tolerance; then they, in order to be consistent, need to stand behind Phil and be tolerant of his views. Both sides are wrong!! Both sides miss the point! It is not about ducks, Jack. It is not about rights! It is not about freedom!! If Satan can keep Christians focused on the wrong issue, he wins.
AS long as Christians try to fight in the public arena, they are fighting the wrong battle. We were not called to be soldiers of the world. We were not saved to fight for material possessions. We were saved to be part of the Army of God. His army does not fight with physical swords (or guns or bombs).
Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. (Matthew 26:52)
If we fight with this world’s weapons, we will be defeated.
The real battle is a spiritual battle. God has not called up to champion a political party. God did not die for the Constitution of the United States. Christ did not come to seek and to save TV programs. God sent His Only Son to die for my sins and your sins (John 3:16). Christ came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10). Satan desires to keep our eye off the real prize. He wants us to focus on this world and forget about the world to come.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12
3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (II Corinthians 10:3-5).
We are to be busy sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who have not accepted Him as Lord and Savior. We need to be living the Christian life of love and compassion in order to draw men and women to the Savior. We need to focus on Christ. We need to remember that only when we lift Him up will men be drawn to Him. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me (John 12:32).
While we are busy debating about Phil’s right to freedom of speech or A&E’s right to hire and fire as it chooses, we are missing the point. While we are busy boycotting and fussing, we are forgetting that those who oppose the Word of God need salvation. Yes, I said it. If one is opposed to the plain teaching of the Word of God, they are not a Christian. If one does not hear the voice of God, can he claim to be one of God’s sheep? My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: (John 10:27).
If we Christians were living the Christian life and sharing the Lord with those around us, this debate over what Phil said would not even exist. The only reason for the debate is we have not been the light to a dark world that Christ called us to be.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
Remember, those who oppose the plain Word of God are sitting in the darkness of sin and error and need to see the Light of the World—Jesus. The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up (Matthew 4:16).
