When we are running late and there is a traffic jam, our thoughts often dwells more on the fact those other crazy drivers will cause us to be late instead of the providence of God keeping us from a deadly crash. When we are feeling poorly, our thoughts tend to turn towards why the Great Physician doesn’t heal us instead of thinking that the All-knowing God knows we would get into trouble if we felt well and carried out our plans. Too often we act like the child that thinks their plans are far superior to what their parents plan. Children look at immediate gratification while loving parents look at the long-range benefits.
Children also often don’t understand what all their parents give to them. They often complain about not having this, that, and the other. They think their parents do nothing for them. The problem is that they don’t realize how many gifts the parents give on a daily blessing. On the humorous side, they don’t realize what a gift it is for the parent to allow them to continue to live after a gross disobedience or a smart-alec response. J On a more positive note, many children—young children and teens alike—don’t understand the gift of a roof over their head. They don’t realize that transportation—even in an old vehicle—is a gift. They forget that the parents have to work to earn money to provide meals and snacks for the children to enjoy. Being a loving parent means sacrificing for the sake of the children.
The greatest parental sacrifice ever given for children was roughly 2000 years ago when the Perfect Parent sacrificed His only Son for disobedient children. God did not sacrifice Jesus when we were being good and obedient; but He sacrificed the Perfect Lamb of God for us when we were at odds with Him (Romans 5:8). Every day we need to thank God for His Perfect Gift. We need to become thankful children.
One thing that we need to be thankful for is the gift of time. I was never supposed to live past the age of 16. I am now 60. I look at every day from God as a gift. None of us are promised tomorrow. Every day is a gift from our Father of Love to be used for His honor and glory. I don’t care if it is Monday or Friday, each day is a gift and created by God for us to use for Him (Psalm 118:24).
Let’s give thanks for all our Lord has done for us!!
