Why Take Time to Read the Bible?
That is another good question. To the growing Christian, this is like asking, “Why take time to eat and breathe?” Reading and studying the Bible is like eating and breathing. It is necessary for life itself. We cannot grow as a Christian in our spiritual walk unless we do take time to read and study the Bible. We can no more grow spiritually without eating the Word of God than we can grow physically without eating food. Spending time with God alone in His Word is essential to life itself.
What are some of the benefits of reading the Word?
There is blessing in just the reading of the Word of God. In the very last book of the Bible, we are told that the one who takes time to read the Word will be blessed (Rev 1:3). Do you desire God to bless you? Then read His Word. Do you need blessings? Then read His Word. Do you want the favor of God to fall on you? Then read His Word.
Do you need a cleansing in your life? Do you need strength to overcome sin? Do you need your mind purified? Then read His Word.
Psa 119:9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
Do you desire to be able to overcome your enemies by outwitting them? Do you need to be able to understand how the devil tempts? Do you need wisdom to discover the traps of Satan? Do you need wisdom? Then read His Word.
Psa 119:98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
Do you desire to know more than those who attempt to teach you? Do you need help in your school work? Do you need help understanding what it is that is expected of you? Do you need to be able to grasp your studies? Then read His Word.
Psa 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
Do you need help with overcoming sin? Do you need to have knowledge of what sin is? Do you need help with learning the right thing to do? Do you need to know what you should avoid? Then read His Word.
Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Do you want delight in your life? Do you want to feel good about life? Do you want more joy in your life? Then read His Word.
Psa 119:16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
Psa 119:47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.
Do you desire the blessings of the Lord? Do you want to avoid the curses of the Lord? Do you want your life to be one that pleases God? Do you want to live in such a way that you invite God to pour His bountiful blessings upon you? Do you seek to obey the Lord? Do you seek to have successes in your life? Then read His Word.
Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Do you want to grow in your love for God? Do you want your children to learn to love the Lord? Do you want to see the mighty power of God? Do you want to learn what true success means? Do you want to keep your focus on the Lord? Then read His Word.
Deut 6:6-9 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
Just in case you have not figured it out yet, it is important to read the Word of God. I urge you to take time alone with the Lord every day. Spend time reading His Word. Seek His face through spending time in His instruction manual. To have a healthy and growing spiritual life, you must spend time in His Word. I believe it was D. L. Moody who said, “His Word will either keep you from sin or sin will keep you from His Word.”
